Every Way to Protect Your Leeds Driveway (Tried & Tested)

1. Telescopic Bollards — Verdict: Buy

Cost: £749 (one) to £2,596 (four) installed. Worth: 9/10 for theft prevention.

Why they top the list: a thief can defeat every other layer (relay-attack the key, hack the OBD, jam the tracker) and still not move a 2-tonne SUV through a concrete-set steel post. Bollards are the only physical barrier between “car about to be driven away” and “car still on the drive”.

2. Thatcham S5 Tracker — Verdict: Buy (if motor £30k+)

£400–£600 fitted plus ~£20/month subscription. Worth: 7/10 for recovery, not prevention.

On cars tracked from the A1(M) or M62 corridor, recovery rates are dramatically better. Pair with bollards for belt-and-braces. Many JLR insurers now mandate this.

3. Faraday Pouch — Verdict: Buy (£15)

£10–£25. Worth: 8/10 for the price. Blocks relay attacks at the source. Test it monthly.

4. Steering Wheel Lock — Verdict: Buy

£80–£200. Worth: 6/10. Visible deterrent. Disklok is the gold standard.

5. Doorbell Camera + Motion Lights — Verdict: Buy

£150–£300 total. Worth: 5/10 prevention, 8/10 evidence. Ring, Nest, Eufy all fine.

6. Driveway Gate — Verdict: Buy if you have a long drive

£2,000–£8,000+ installed. Worth: 7/10 for detached Yorkshire homes with proper frontage (Alwoodley, Adel, Harrogate). Lots of LS17 and HG properties suit a gate. Bollards do 80% of the job at 20% of the cost.

7. Generic CCTV — Verdict: Meh

£200–£1,000 installed. Worth: 3/10. Gives you grainy footage but doesn't get the car back.

8. Alarm Sticker / Fake Camera — Verdict: Skip

£5–£30. Worth: 1/10. Thieves know which stickers are fakes. Don't bother.

The Yorkshire Reality

Across our LS and HG installs, the houses that get hit again after a neighbour's theft are the ones that did the cheap layers (sticker, fake camera, basic alarm) and skipped the expensive one (bollards). Houses that don't get hit have visible, real, physical barriers in front of the bumper.
